The distaff is a tool that predates the invention of the spinning wheel in 1533, and it holds wool neatly in place before it’s spun on the spindle. Mohair, known as a resilient yarn made from the hair of the Angora goat, is a popular fabric renowned for its soft texture. As one of the oldest textile fibres, mohair is used in the production of scarves, hats, sweaters and home furnishing such as carpets and rugs. The Angora is a breed of domesticated goat from Turkey – in fact, its name is derived from Ankara, the capital city of Turkey. The word mohair itself is derived from the Arabic word “mukhayyar”, for the fabric woven from the goat hair.
